II.- EXPLORING The Old Dream God
The Old Dream God is the digital version, in English and Spanish, of the story of the same name by the immortal Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. In this telling, created for you by ALLOY 21-07, children can read the story and play with the characters and objects that appear along the way. Nicky, a friendly and intelligent mouse, hosts the program and guides children through the tale, inviting them to participate in fun games that transform them into characters in the story.
In the Games Center of The Old Dream God , children will find hours of entertainment. There are one arcade game: MIND EXPLOSION.
 
Initial Selection Window
When starting up the program in Windows 95, 98. an initial selection window appears. Here there are buttons for the following options: Play/Juega, to start the game; On-line Manual, to see the on-line manual in English; Who's Who to meet ALLOY's team; Internet Connection, to connect to the Story Games Netground (www.storygames.com) and Exit, to close the program.
 
 
Languages
At the start of the program, you can select the desired language:
English or Spanish.
 
Main Menu
The Main Menu has the following options: Read and Play, Hjalmar´s Dreams, and Play. Nicky narrates the story and guides children through the program

The Control Hat
In the Main Screen and in the scenes of the option Read and Play you will find a hat. If you place the pointer on it, it will turn and you will be able to choose among the following options:
Read and Play
This option can be selected from the Main Menu by clicking on the mouse that appeared from the Jack-in-the-Box. When passing the pointer on it, you will listen to NIcky saying "Read and Play". Here children can read the story at their own pace while exploring the many surprises found on every page.
Scene 1
On every page the following options are available:
 
Yalhmar´s Seven Dreams
Yalhmar´s dreams are hidden in the Main Menu. Children will discover them and enjoy each dream as a short filmlike adventure.

Dictionary
The Dictionary contains an alphabetical listing of the most important
words found in the story. The Dictionary is accessed either from the
pages of the story (Read and Play) or directly from the Games Menu.

PLAY
A series of virtual adventures will take children into challenging experiences that will develop their computer skills and language abilities. Children will have: Mind Explosion.
Mind Explosion
A journey through mind puzzling adventures will lead children into witty word games, improving their vocabulary and spelling abilities.
In Mind Explosion the children can use the next keys:
 
Main menu
In the Main Menu, the child can use the mouse or the keys to access the different options of the game .. To select an option with the mouse, place the cursor on the selected option on the screen and then press the left button; to select an option with the keyboard, press the up and down arrow keys, and select the option using the spacebar. To find out the properties of each key, select with the mouse the question mark located at the lower left hand corner of the screen and click.
How to play
This screen shows which keys are to be used in the game. To explore the screen keyboard, the child can use either the keyboard keys or the mouse; if there is no mouse, the highlight keys in the screen keyboard can be explored pressing your keyboard keys to see what will happen in the game.
Bubble zone.
This screen is designed to have the child respond to different excercises, such as dictation, image recognition and concepts. The keyboard is used for this purpose. The ESC is not to be used in this screen; the child must finish this excercise in order to continue with the game and earn points, lives and bullets.
The Game
The game allows the player the following options:
 
 
Internet Connection
The Old Dream God has a direct connection to the STORY GAMES NETGROUND virtual playground. There the child can visit many places: Hans Christian Andersen's house, the Animation Factory, the House of Games, the Cinema and many other fun and interesting sites. Be sure to visit the NETGROUND at
www.storygames.com.
 
 
III TROUBLESHOOTING
 
Windows 98 and Windows 95.
 
The program doesn't start up automatically when I insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.
From the desktop double-click on the "My Computer" icon. Double-click on the "CD-ROM" icon. If it does not work double-click on the startup.exe program. You may also use the Start menu to lacate the program section, and next the section OldDreamGod, to finish click on the "Run the Old Dream God Program" icon.
 
When I start up the program, the following message appears: "Not enough colors".
If the message stays on screen, click on "OK" to exit the program. Place the pointer over the desktop, press the right mouse button and select "Properties". On the next screen select "Settings". Locate the "Palette" item and select "256". Restart the program.
 
When I start up the program, the following message appears: "Not enough memory".
If the message stays on screen, click on "Continue" to exit the program. Close any other programs which may be open and restart Windows before trying to start up the program again. If the problem persists, verify that your computer meets the minimum system requirements.
 
The animations are slow and sound playback is erratic.
Close any other programs which may be open and try to run the program again. If the problem persists, verify that your computer meets the minimum system requirements.
 
There is no sound.
If you have other programs that use sound, verify that these are working properly before proceeding. Make sure to close any other programs before trying to run the program again. Check for any loose speaker connections and make sure any external volume control is turned up. Verify that your system's sound is turned on. Refer to your Windows manual for specific details on how to activate and adjust your system's sound controls. If the problem persists, verify that your computer meets the minimum system requirements.
 
The mouse pointer does not appear in the Mind Explosion Game.
To solve this problem, make sure that the DirectX drivers are correct for your PC configuration. You may use the video or mouse drivers that came with your machine. If the problem cannot be solved, the child must use the keyboard.
 
The user cannot see the electronic manual.
WordPad, included in Windows 95/98 CD must be installed.  To install, press configuration in the Initial Menu and then press Control Panel;  a window will open, select Windows Installation, ask for for details of Icon accessories, locate the icon WordPad on the screen and select it.  Then, press OK in the remaining windows.
