Divide students into groups of four. Give each member of each group
a worksheet with the first two lines of an unfamiliar fairy tale
on it. Have the group members write their name on their own story-starter
paper.
Explain that each member of the group will write for five minutes,
and then pass his/her paper to the student on his/her right, who
will continue the story. (Take time to model each step.)
Have the students begin writing and call time after five minutes.
Make sure that the group members pass their papers to the group
member on their right. Remind the students to read what the student
to his left wrote before continuing the story. Have the students
write for five more minutes and call time again.
Repeat the five-minute writing segments until the story papers
have gone around the group once. Then, have each group member read
his/her story paper to the rest of the group. Have the group members
respond to each story reader with feedback and suggestions.
In the next writing session, allow students to work individually
to revise and edit their own story papers. Encourage the students
to illustrate their stories. Circulate to provide support and to
answer questions.
Collect the finished stories and create a class storybook. Make
a copy of the storybook for each student in the class.
