Divide the class into collaborative learning groups. Have each group
use the materials located at the Learning Center to read about the
following topics:
| Group 1 |
Andersen's home town of Odense |
| Group 2 |
Andersen's family background and his lonely childhood |
| Group 3 |
Copenhagen - The Magical City |
| Group 4 |
The Snow Queen (group will retell the story) |
| Group 5 |
The Little Mermaid (group will retell the story) |
Have each group prepare a class presentation with illustrations
or posters to accompany the presentations. For example, Group 1
will report on Andersen's home town; Group 2 will report on Andersen's
family and childhood; Group 3 will report on the city of Copenhagen,
and so on.
After all the groups have presented, discuss the life of Hans Christian
Andersen. During the discussion, ask the class to help list the
important events in Hans Christian Andersen's life on the chalkboard.
Have the students return to their groups and assign one part of
Hans Christian Andersen's life to each group. Each group will use
poster board and art supplies to create the text and illustrations
for the Big Book of Hans Christian Andersen's life.
After each group has created its part of the Big Book, (titled Our
Biography of Hans Christian Andersen), bind the completed sections
into a book and display it at the Learning Center.
