Step 4. Class Discussion on the Theme of the Ugly Duckling

Tell the students the story of Hans Christian Andersen's lonely childhood. (If the students have already done the learning center activity, review the material on Andersen's childhood.)
Ask the students to identify similarities between Andersen's feelings as a child and the ugly duckling's feelings.
Divide the class into groups of three and have them chart the similarities between Andersen's childhood experiences and the ugly duckling's experiences.
When the students have completed the worksheets, go over them together in class.

Additional Activity - Compare The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling

Read The Little Mermaid to the class.
Discuss and chart the similarities and differences between the mermaid and the duckling.
